Our Story

A shared journey, a unique vision

Ariel naturally followed in her Father's footsteps, photography becoming a great passion. Together, they developed a refined eye for beauty, seen in their photography, home decor, and fine art Photography. Running a studio was a long-held dream, now realized through collaborations on diverse projects like weddings, graduations, and fine art photography. Their work masterfully blends technical skill with emotion and story, honouring Brian’s parents, Alfred and Irene Dernesch of Waterloo, who championed sharing one's gifts. This legacy continues to thrive through Root & Canopy Fine Art A & B, bringing their unique artistic vision to Kitchener Waterloo, Ontario, and beyond.

The genesis of Root & Canopy Fine Art A & B began with a profound bond between Brian and Ariel Dernesch. From quiet side roads, cameras in hand, they captured light and life. Brian, a natural-born teacher and visionary, instilled in Ariel a love for photography, astronomy, and observing the world with curiosity and wonder. As a professor of astronomy and owner of KW Telescope in Kitchener, Ontario, his knowledge spans many fields, always guiding others to "look up with me." The name Root & Canopy reflects Brian's love of woodworking and teaching – deep roots of knowledge, sheltering and inspiring growth.

Crafting timeless beauty from reclaimed wood

What makes a Root & Canopy piece uniquely ours? Brian’s lifelong admiration for Frank Lloyd Wright and modern architecture deeply influences his work. Raised by antique collectors, he learned to restore and repurpose, shaping him into a skilled problem-solver. His designs draw inspiration from films spanning the 1920s to the 1960s, an era celebrated for innovation and craftsmanship. These influences are evident in every creation, from woodworking to home design and photography, where function and beauty are intentionally balanced. Each photograph, thoughtfully paired with a handcrafted frame from recycled materials, becomes a sustainable and unique piece for your home. Made truly from a place of Love.

At Root & Canopy Fine Art A & B, we hope our art brings a profound sense of family into your home – a gentle reminder to slow down, be present, and truly take in the moments that matter. The St. Jacobs Train Bridge Memory

One memory that truly captures the heart and soul of Root & Canopy Fine Art A & B revolves around the St. Jacobs Train Bridge. Our family would often walk this bridge, with Irene playfully screaming, Alfie cracking jokes, and Brian carrying at least one child over his shoulders. Years later, Ariel and Brian would often photograph this very bridge, each without the other's knowledge, until they'd discover their shared captures. This shared passion extended to documenting the mechanics of the century-old trains in their hometown of St. Jacobs – a testament to their deep-rooted connection and shared artistic vision.
